How to Survive Biochemistry While Working Full-Time and Balancing Life

Many of the tips I will share here can also be applied to the tips I share in my post on How to Survive Organic Chemistry While Working Full-Time and Balancing Life, and vice versa!

Tip #1 Get a Study Buddy

A great benefit of a study buddy is: accountability. Having a study buddy is a great way to keep you focused and on track, especially when the challenging subjects begin to arise. It’s perfectly normal to have the question of, “can I get through this?” The answer is of course you can, but be certain that many of your fellow classmates are feeling the same way, which is why it is great to have a study buddy to lean on during times of doubt and help keep you encouraged.

Compatibility is also important when looking for a study buddy. A great study buddy is someone who has the same level of drive as you, and desire to do well. A study buddy can either hinder or facilitate your progress, so be prudent and mindful of the company that is kept. It is okay to be selective when finding study buddy. If someone isn’t vibing with your study style, you have permission to look out for your best interest and grade, you owe that to yourself. If you are working hard, and pulling all the weight, it might be time to question if this person is holding you back or helping to excel.

A study buddy can also be a source of encouragement in times of trial. There is a relatability and camaraderie that comes from having a study buddy because you both are going through the same experience and can empathize with each other.

A great study buddy is one who can provide constructive feedback and look out for your best interest. Surround yourself with the those who share the mentality as you. If you want an A in the class, find someone who also shares that “I want an Amentality.

Biochemistry is challenging subject, but having a study buddy or a study group can make the class more survivable. Sometimes the key to understanding a concept is having someone else teach it to you, or you teach it to them. Biochemistry is come laden with memorization and understanding, so having a study buddy or group to go over concepts can be extremely helpful.

If you are a distance learning student and meeting in person not an option for you, Zoom is a great tool to use in order to schedule study meetings and still create that group study environment.

Tip #2 Youtube as a Resource

Youtube is a great resource to use if you need reinforcement concepts or break through the “I’m stuck” wall.

Specifically the Ninja Nerd channel is particularly useful and helpful because he breaks down the concepts in digestible way, and he adds in a little fun and humor which is always a nice added bonus.

Tip #3 Ask Questions

Watching/listening the lectures or reading the book doesn’t always provide the answers you need in order to fully grasp and understand a concept, which is why is so important to ask questions. I know many people struggle with the feelings of fear or embarrassment, or get bombarded with “should’s”. I totally get it, but it’s okay, and quite frankly, it’s expected that you ask questions. That is what the teachers are there for. Most teachers love questions because it shows you are engaged in the subject material. Just like organic chemistry, everything build on each other, so it is crucial to understand each concept before moving onto the next.
